New games join Xbox 360 “Platinum Hits” collection

xbox-360_logoSometimes the very best gaming deals for consoles are the “Greatest hits” series; when a great game gets long in the tooth and doesn’t command retailer shelf space and the hearts and minds of the gaming populace any longer, publishers will often reinvigorate it by making it a “greatest hits” title.

Microsoft calls them “Platinum Hits”, and today added five titles to the “Greatness is Earned” banner: “Grand Theft Auto IV” (Rockstar Games); “Street Fighter IV” (Capcom); “Left 4 Dead” (Valve); “Saint’s Row 2” (THQ); and “Star Wars–The Force Unleashed” (LucasArts).

That means a couple of things for you. Most important, of course, is that these games are now $19.99.  However, many retailers are offering “Buy 2, get the third free” right now on the Platinum Hits series, meaning you can pick up three great games for about $40. That deal is going on through October 31st.

This is a good chance to pick up on any of these titles that you may have missed the first time around. Good things come to those who wait.

Left 4 Dead 2 pre-orders begin

l4d_logoToday Valve announced that they are taking pre-orders for Left 4 Dead 2. You can pre-order via select retailers (for the Xbox 360 or PC versions) and through Steam. Pre-order perks include a 10% discount as well as an exclusive in-game melee weapon, the American Baseball Bat. In addition, those who pre-order will get early access to the demo, which is slated for October 27th.

Left 4 Dead 2 is scheduled for full release on November 17th. Except for in Australia.

Valve’s Gabe Newell is flying to Australia to visit modder

valve_logo (1)Here’s the summary:

  • Left 4 Dead boycott group gains popularity.
  • Valve offers to fly the founders up to Washington to play Left 4 Dead 2.
  • A prolific Australian Left 4 Dead modder name Joe W-A  gets sad and emails Gabe, asks “Why haven’t I been flown to Valve? You guys need to preview my campaign.”
  • Gabe responds “I’m boycotting your campaign.”
  • Joe W-A offers to fly Gabe to Brisbane. Gabe probably thinks this is a joke.
  • Joe W-A raises $3000 to fly Gabe to Australia.

Today, Valve announced that Gabe Newell is indeed going to take up Joe W-A on his offer, and visit him down under, on October 7th. Valve employee Erik Johnson will be travelling with Gabe, and will be blogging about it on the L4D.com blog.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering about the $3000 that was raised; Valve will be paying their own way, and Joe W-A donated the entirety of the money collected to the Child’s Play charity.

There you have it. A happy story for a sunny Thursday.

Engineer update? Clever fake, or insider info?

Dispenser-on-a-blimp

Dispenser-on-a-blimp

Either someone got their hands on some insider info, or this is an amazing fake reveal of  the first Engineer update.

Called “project 25″, or “The Mothership”, it’s basically a Dispenser taped to a blimp. While not releasing as much health and metal as a dispenser, it is mobile, and can be controlled by the Engie.

Be careful, though–if an enemy shoots it, it goes Kaboom.

They also show the community map CTF Mach 4.

At the bottom of the page is an allusion to day 2: Confidential.

The regular site at Teamfortress.com does not have the link to the Engineer update yet. As we get info, we’ll be sure to let you guys know.

Thanks to Shwaip for the find!

Update: Robin Walker emailed me to confirm that it is indeed fake. Of course, the “fake by sunwar” at the bottom cleanly answers that question as well.

The high-and-mighty Armchair Quarterbacks from the Steam forums are also having a field day, triumphantly declaring their superiority from their ivory towers and pointing out how obviously fake this is, and how I’m an idiot for posting/copypasting/being trolled.

The fake is so well done and so clever, that this is a newsworthy piece for several reasons, which I won’t bother to list. I will say this: One of my goals as Editor is to stimulate conversation, fun, and traffic. End of story? It worked.

Left 4 Dead DLC “Crash Course” available September 29

CrashCourse_final_02Today Valve announced that the second DLC update for Left 4 Dead will be made available worldwide on September 29 on Xbox 360 and PC.

From their press release:

Crash Course delivers new single-player, multiplayer and co-operative gameplay to both platforms, and bridges the gap between the end of the “No Mercy” campaign and the beginning of “Death Toll” in the original game.
While containing both Survival maps and a Co-operative Campaign, the primary goal of Crash Course is to deliver a complete Versus mode experience in just 30 minutes, resulting in a streamlined version of the game’s existing Versus campaigns. A recharge timer for infected teammates has also been added, and item spawn behavior has changed for more balanced gameplay.

I expect the Icrontic L4D community will be abuzz with this one. Crash Course will be free of charge for PC owners, while pricing for Xbox 360 owners has not been announced yet.

Hilarious fake TF2 update, seemingly endorsed by Valve

Signed, Saxton Hale

The Team Fortress 2 dev team has been known to play mind games with their fans before, so you’re going to have to come up with your own interpretation of the following:

The latest entry on the Official TF2 blog hints at a “guard dog” update. Clicking through leads to a mysterious site on a non-Valve domain, 50webs.com. It looks like a new playable class called “Guard Dog”, and goes into great detail about abilities, weapons, and achievements, but the fake footer and this post on the Steam forums revealing it to be a very well done fake lead us to believe that it is a grand effort by a very talented hoaxster.

We could be wrong, of course. Valve could be making it look like a fake so that if they do drop the mysterious “10th class” hinted at in the past, we will all be thrilled at their clever games.

I’m still holding out for Engineer updates. Perhaps a twist on this post will reveal that the Guard Dog is actually part of the Engineer update; some of those Guard Dog weapons certainly look familiar…

Text of Decision Report from OFLC regarding Left 4 Dead 2

decision-reportWe just received a PDF of the decision report from Australia’s OFLC regarding their decision to refuse classification for Valve’s Left 4 Dead 2.

The game contains violence that is high in impact and is therefore unsuitable for persons aged under 18 years to play.
The game contains realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence which is inflicted upon “the Infected” who are living humans infected with a rabies-like virus that causes them to act violently. The player can choose from a variety of weapons including pistols, shotguns, machine guns and sniper rifles. However, it is the use of the “melee” weapons such as the crowbar, axe, chainsaw and Samurai sword which inflict the most damage. These close in attacks cause copious amounts of blood spray and splatter, decapitations and limb dismemberment as well as locational damage where contact is made to the enemy which may reveal skeletal bits and gore. Projectile shots to infected humans can cause abdominal wounds which can reveal innards or even cause intestines to spill from the wounds.
The Infected attack the player in an unrelenting fashion, with numerous foe attacking the player at one time. The use of the “melee” weapons can Wipe out several Infected in one blow which cause the above mentioned blood and gore effects. The player kills a very large amount of enemy characters to proceed through the game. Whilst no post mortem damage can be inflicted, piles of bodies lay about the environment.
The interactive nature of the game increases the overall impact of the frequent and intense
depictions of violence. This coupled with the graphic depictions of blood and gore combine to
create a playing impact which is high.
A minority of the Board is of the opinion that the violence is strong in playing impact and therefore warrants an MA 15+ classification with the consumer advice of strong violence.
Decision:
This game is Refused Classification.

There you have it. While some members of the board feel that the game warrants an MA 15+ classification, the majority feel that adults can’t handle the high impact of  things like “piles of bodies” and the revelation of innards or even intestines.

Being an adult gamer in Australia is apparently becoming more and more difficult.

New Left 4 Dead DLC announced – “Crash Course” Campaign

CrashCourse_final_02Tying together the events between “No Mercy” and “Death Toll”, a new Left 4 Dead campaign entitled “Crash Course” is set to hit the intertubes in September.

The campaign of course will work as single player, multiplayer, and versus content. In addition to bringing just a new campaign, there will be more dialogue from the original voice cast.

Gameplay has been addressed as well; a new recharge timer for infected teammates, and adjustments to item drop rates are both set to deliver a more streamlined experience.

While Crash Course will be single- and multiplayer, the primary focus was to deliver a streamlined versus experience. The goal of the design team was to deliver a campaign in which a versus game could be completed in 30 minutes.

Sorry Xbox 360 owners, you’ll have to pay the Microsoft tax: The campaign will be free for PC users but will cost 560 MS points on the Xbox 360.

Left 4 Dead 2 at ComicCon: Introducing the Spitter

The Spitter

The Spitter

Today at ComicCon, Valve introduced a new special infected for Left 4 Dead 2 called the Spitter. The Spitter has “an area attack that can split up Survivors or flush them out of their hiding spots” according to the press release.

In addition to the Spitter, they announced a new “uncommon common” infected exclusive to the Swamp Fever campaign called the “Mudmen”.

News on some more items was released today as well, including a cricket bat, an AK-47, and a grenade launcher.

I was surprised to hear about “uncommon common” infected. One can assume this means they can be part of the swarm as normal infected can be, and are probably relatively easy to put down, but perhaps have special abilities that normal infected don’t have? The screenshot alludes to the fact that they’re crawling around; perhaps they are buried in the swamp and come up as you’re walking through. In addition, another odd aspect of the screenshot shows what looks like an infected suspended by a bunch of lines. Whether that means another infected strung it up there or it’s just a decoration remains to be seen.

Left 4 Dead 2 campaign “Swamp Fever” to debut at Comic Con

Valve revealed the first playable campaign for Left 4 Dead 2 at E3 2009, which was called “The Parish”. Today they announced that the second campaign, titled “Swamp Fever” will be playable at Comic Con 2009 next week.

Whereas The Parish takes place in a ruined New Orleans, Swamp Fever looks to take place in… well, you figure it out.

From the press release:

LucasArts classics coming to Steam

Weave music, my friends

Weave music, my friends

Today LucasArts announced that they are coming to Steam. In addition to some of their current titles, they are re-releasing some of their venerable classics such as The Dig and Loom.

A list of releases:

  • Armed and Dangerous™
  • Indiana Jones® and the Fate of Atlantis
  • Indiana Jones® and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
  • LEGO® Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure
  • LOOM™
  • Star Wars Battlefront® II
  • Star Wars Republic Commando®
  • Star Wars Starfighter™
  • The Dig®
  • Thrillville®: Off the Rails™

I personally am thrilled to see Loom on that list. It’s one of those games that I always wanted to play but somehow never had the chance to. Again, nostalgia wins. I know some people who are gonna poop themselves about The Dig.
