Last week we reported on the “Pay what you want” sale for the game “World of Goo,” where people could pay any price for the game. Yesterday, World of Goo developers 2D Boy announced that they would be extending that sale until Sunday, October 25th, since they consider it a “huge success.”
The sale garnered a great deal of press and attention for the company. 2D Boy reported that over 57,000 people bought World of Goo off of their website. The average price paid for the game was $2.03, with almost 17,000 people paying only $.01 for the game. This, coupled with the fact that 2D Boy did not profit off of any price lower than $.30 because of PayPal fees would initially make it look like the sale had not gone well, but 2D Boy has very happily declared it a gigantic success.
2D Boy has found that Steam sales of the game rose a surprising 40% during the duration of the sale, making this week their highest for Steam sales in several months. The fluctuation on WiiWare wasn’t as significant–only 9% higher–during the week of the sale.
The World of Goo makers were also delighted by the results of a survey that they put out with the game to figure out why people were paying the prices that they were. Survey takers reported that the most common reason they had for paying the price that they did was that it was what they felt they could afford. The second most popular reason was that gamers wanted to support the pay what you want model. 2D Boy was very happy to reveal that the majority of gamers did not state that they had chosen their price because they felt like it was representative of what the game was worth to them.
The sale continues through October 25th, and you can get the game from off of the World of Goo website, WiiWare, or Steam.
