Sony = Nazis and Joan of Arc?

RommelSony has done it again with one of their international ad campaigns.  Two controversial Sony advertisements were released in Chile recently, one depicting a gamer giving a blood transfusion to a Nazi, and another showing a gamer giving his heart for transplant to Joan of Arc.  According to the press release, the Nazi depicted is Germany’s WWII Afrikakorps general Erwin Rommel.

This ad comes on the tails of other highly controversial Sony campaigns like the openly racist “White is Coming” and aggressive “Jump Here”, which was recalled for suggesting suicide in train stations.

    That sounds more like Sony is advertising against gaming rather than for it.

    I think the idea behind these ads is to illustrate how their products can offer gamers a transplant into the position of historical figures, in a surrealistic sense from the illustrations. Play as the good play as the bad.
    Also Erwin was a good guy, as far as Nazis go, he refused to kill Jews and treated captured enemies well. He is a vet from WWI and seems to have carried over the ideals to WWII, his division in Africa was not convicted of war crimes. He joined the conspiracy against Hitler but opposed the attempted murder and allowed to commit suicide and receive a full military burial. Joan of Ark you should know.

    Oh I knew about Rommel, he was more of a German nationalist than an actual Nazi. But those are still really bad ads that don't seem to support gaming even in the context you presented.

    These guys are brilliant, I don't necessarily agree with their moves, especially the older racist ones, but the know how to get attention.
