Microsoft bans unauthorized Xbox 360 storage units in next update

Argh, shoulda' paid those licensing fees

Argh, shoulda' paid those licensing fees

The next dashboard update for the Xbox 360 has a couple of fun new features in store with Twitter, Facebook and Zune support–but not every feature is going to be good for all users.  Major Nelson, the Microsoft Director of Programming for Xbox Live warned users that the update would also be blocking all unauthorized Xbox storage devices.

When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you’ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to “back it up,” you’d better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.

If you need help identifying officially licensed Xbox 360 storage devices or accessories you can read more about the licensed accessories program on Xbox.com

Having an authorization program is a reasonable way to help minimize cheating and security issues on Xbox Live and protects users from devices that could potentially damage their systems.  It’s not as if the hard-core modders are going to be very hampered by this–those users typically know the risk they’re taking; authorized hardware protects the general user.

The downside, however, is the fact that they’re making this change mid-console life and will effectively brick consumer’s investments in external memory devices and could make hundreds of hours of saved games unrecoverable if one happens not to see the warning ahead of time.  Now hopefully this is going to be clearly stated before the update is released to everyone, so no one is taken by surprise (and no, a blog post on an Xbox community leader’s blog does not constitute a clear warning.)

The update is currently only available to people accepted into the preview program but we expect that it will be reaching everyone pretty soon so if you are one of the users that will be effected by this issue you should probably move your data back onto your 360 and pick up an authorized device before clicking that shiny update button.

Can't really blame them, if you ask me. The computing industry as a whole has been trying to stop piracy since... well, computers.

The piece that I was focusing on was that people who wanted to pay 1/2 the price for a memory card are getting hosed. Did I read the article incorrectly?

Nope, I think I did actually. I read something about piracy into the article that apparently wasn't there.

    Bummer.

Notice it says unauthorized, not third party though.

It's a bummer situation for everyone, I don't understand why Microsoft didn't do this from the start. It's not like they couldn't anticipate the problem.

Edit: Jarred's exactly right, I've seen the story spun that way elsewhere but the source post from Major Nelson is pretty clear that 3rd party is okay as long as it's an authorized device.

How do I know if I have an "Authorized" device? I have a generic 2gb laptop HD in a USB enclosure attached to my XBox, I just use it to store some music to play while I game. Is it going to stop working?

From my understanding of it's something you have bought at Walmart or Target you are fine.

Mainly they are banning cards that were never approved, such as memory card to SD card readers which i primarily used to flash exploits on them.

If it's something you purchased from a a reputable retailer you should be fine.

Basically: If you are a pirate, your shit will break.

There is nothing pirated on it, but I can't imagine that my device is specifically recognized by Microsoft...

I didn't buy it as a single device. It's an old laptop hard drive, which I put into an enclosure that I got on clearance at Microcenter.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it still works.

So, instead of bringing the astronomical prices of Xbox storage media down to Earth, they've decided to ban the use of storage media that's not priced astronomically. Great job!

    I've found third-party 4gb 360 memory cards on google for $40.

It's not that big of a deal. Most people just use their HD anyways.

98% of people will be unaffected by this.

Yet another outrage for no reason. All it will result in is more authorized versions with a $2-5 premium.

Hey, be nice. Icrontic is full of good people, we promise.
