MechWarrior surprise!
The announcement of a new MechWarrior game totally blindsided us today like a well-placed Death from Above strike. It seems Smith & Tinker and Piranha Games are working on a full reboot of the MechWarrior games. For a property that’s changed hands as much as MechWarrior/BattleTech, it’s easy to roll your eyes and pass this off as another rumored game that’ll never see the light of day. But the trailer says otherwise. The trailer says it’s nothing short of AWESOME.
IGN got the exclusive interview with the folks behind this bad boy, so for an in-depth look at where they’re headed you can read on here. With the reboot, they’ve been able to take technology back a few steps. No longer will players just hit the “find nearest target” button and circle-strafe to see who can blow their opponent’s leg off first. Instead, lance operations will require actual recon in urban environments, changing the dynamic of the gameplay and making things a little grittier than before.
Expect four-player co-op modes and LAN play. Expect awesome graphics with the new Unreal 3 Engine. And expect quite a few Icrontic members to fall headfirst again into one of the most enduring and beloved games of all-time.
Also, since there will be a wait for the new game to come out, MechWarrior 4 and all it’s expansions will become free downloads in coming days. You’ll find them at MekTek.net soon.
