"We’ve got games your 10-year-old won’t be better at"
Today the great folks at Good Old Games announced that they recently celebrated their one year anniversary and we want to send along a well deserved congratulations!
If you aren’t familiar with Good Old Games then there’s no better time than today to check them out. They offer a great platform for legitimately getting great old classic games that may awaken some dormant nostalgia or give you a great opportunity to discover some of the PC gaming classics that have shaped gaming history.
Their model is somewhat similar to that of Steam or Stardock’s Impulse but with a specific focus on classic titles. Beyond their great catalog there are a few other things that make them special; our favorite is that all of their games are DRM-free. That’s right, all of them. This makes perfect sense, without Good Old Games there really wouldn’t be many other ways to get classic games other then resorting to piracy, so the people who do buy from them are already stepping up and showing their class; none of them need to be burdened down with DRM. Thankfully they’ve followed the proper channels to arrange this with publishers and license the titles for new generations of gamers. This lets us give back whenever we get a bit of a retro itch, and want to show that we do value the games—publishers and studios—who defined gaming history.
One of the tricky things when finding classic games is that often times they don’t work on modern computers and operating systems. Not a problem with Good Old Games. All of their titles are going to work on Windows XP and Vista, which means they all play great on our beloved Windows 7 too. Our pro-tip: if you’re running a netbook or PC that’s getting to be a bit ‘classic’ itself, these games run great on limited system resources
Throw in an attractive, well organized site, solid prices, good support, a nice community and the ability to vote on games you’d like them to add next and you’ve got a great platform that fulfill a specific need for gamers.
A few of our favorite games to check out include Beyond Good and Evil, Duke Nuke 3D, Earthworm Jim 1 + 2, The Fallout Trilogy, Heroes of Might and Magic 1-3, Praetorians, The Settlers 2 and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
