Gears of War 3, Natal, and the full body experience

Microsoft’s Project Natal made a big splash at E3 when it showed us the future of motion controlled game play on the Xbox 360. Natal is centered around a camera that will be mounted in front of you–the Xbox 360 then isolates you from the background to track your movements and translate them into your game. While it looks great for, say, hitting balls flying at you, shooter fans were immediately skeptical about having it “tacked on” to their genre.
“A lot of people are interested in what Natal’s presence in Halo is going to be. We are committing to only doing it when it makes sense,” assured Alex Cutting, the producer of Halo 3: ODST in an interview with videogamer.com. ”We are not going to produce a gimmicky feature that just takes advantage of motion controls when it doesn’t feel right.”
Earlier today gamers dropped a surprising bombshell when Epic Games bossman Mark Rein told TechRadar that all of Epic’s future games will include Natal support, including Gears of War 3. “I have no idea what we’re going to do from a game standpoint, but from an engine standpoint, it’s definitely cool stuff and we will support it. I think any future Xbox games we make will have some Natal support. We always want to have something that exploits the unique capabilities of a platform.”
We’re just as clueless as Epic seem to be about what this could look like in game play. Given that it’s a 3rd person shooter that heavily favors the cover system, perhaps we’ll see some kind of system where you duck down or turn your body to take cover. While that sounds like it could be fun for about five minutes, after that we may just chuck the camera off our balcony UPSLynx style.
