Fantasy games that never were: Mega Man 5 vs Marvel

b1bfd1680313aa70d6835030d88ab890The Capcom Unity blog today has a cool bit of nostalgia for those who remember the Mega Man craze of the 90s. Around the time Rockman V came out, Capcom released a mini-magazine called a “Secret File” to market Rockman 5. In it, there was an ad for a fake game called “Rockman V: Confrontation! Dr. Marvel”

Instead of the normal “…Man” robo-bosses, there were robot versions of Marvel heroes, including Morrigan (sexy man!), Captain America (Merikan Man), and Strider Hiryu (Enigmatic Robo Ninja).

Each Marvel hero has been “Dr. Wily”-ed, in that robotic versions of them are teaming up to destroy, once and for all, the confounding Blue Bomber.

The ad looks so legit. My young Japanese counterparts in those days must have been pining over how amazingly cool a game like that would have been. I remember fondly poring over video game magazines and the ads would make me furious with anticipation over upcoming titles; a fake game like this would have been doubly frustrating.
