Out of all the new and wonderful offerings that made up the gaming buffet that is E3 2010, one of the games I was most excited to check out for myself is the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game. I was able to get my chance, and I was not let down in the least.
Scott Pilgrim is a graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O’Malley that has received enough attention to get a big-budget film as well as a video game. The game adaption is a side-scrolling beat-em-up brawler, very much in the same 8-bit vein of Battletoads and River City Ransom.
The game is being developed under the umbrella of Ubisoft, and they have put together a real dream team in order to produce the Scott Pilgrim game—the main reason for my excitement. The project is headed by the original comic’s author, with the musical score written by chiptune punk band Anamanaguchi. And the team member that has me the most excited for the entire project?
Paul Robertson is lending his talent to create the character sprites and animations, and if I understand it correctly he is the art director to boot. An absolute master of creating and animating bitmap sprites, and famous for a few excellent (albeit odd and rather disturbing) animated video game inspired videos such as Pirate Baby’s Cabana Battle Street Fight 2006, Kings of Power Four Billion%, and Syke Energy Commercial.
I am a huge fan of Paul’s works, and this marks his first major debut for working on a game, as opposed to sprite-based animations that are meant to resemble games. With him on board, along with the rest of the team, the game looks and sounds phenomenal.
We were able to speak with the game’s production managers Pierre Gravereau and Marc-Andre Boivin as well as play a demo copy of the game. After playing the demo with Pierre walking us through the main gameplay features, both of us were really impressed. We agreed it was everything a side-scrolling brawler should have, and hits the essence of the comics perfectly. In all, the game just feels right.
I will, without a doubt, be getting this game. Look for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game later this year exclusively on the PlayStation 3.
