Darkspore
Darkspore is the sequel to Spore. In this new adventure, the pretense of the ultimate SimLife game is thrown off, and the creators imbue the game with a plot. It’s played as a top-down fighting game. Players must travel the cosmos finding and evolving their army of super soldiers—in the name of peace, of course. Multi-player modes allow players to pit their creations against each other on a variety of maps. A character editor allows a wide variety of customization options.
Islands of Wakfu
The funkily named Islands of Wakfu is a clever and beautiful RPG, which begins with the end of the world. It serves as a prequel to the MMORPG Dofus, and is set 10,000 years prior, and depicts the origins of many of that game’s elements. The gameplay is that of an isometric dungeon-crawling RPG, and the visuals deliver plenty of quirky style. One of he most played-up features is that playing the game will unlock some items in Dofus, and the upcoming Wakfu MMO.
3DS
The Icrontic spotlight this week shines out from the magic window of the 3DS, and its release titles. The 3DS is a handheld gaming console from Nintendo which utilizes no-glasses 3D and augmented reality mechanics to allow for innovative mobile gaming. The machine comes with enough toys to keep one entertained for hours, but a few packaged games are already available:
Pilotwings Resort
Pilotwings Resort is a combo sequel of Pilot WIngs and Wii Sports Resort. Players visit Wahu Island, first seen in Wii Walking Around—or whatever it was called—but made famous in Wii Sports Resort. Players will complete 3D challenges in a variety of different aircraft. The gameplay is casual—players choose either a free-fly mode, wherein they can search for rings and stuff, or a mission-based mode, which gets progressively more difficult. It’s also the first time we get to use our Miis on a handheld console.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars is a turn-based tactical RPG set in Tom Clancy’s famous story world. Players move a team of operatives through a string of missions on 3D tactical combat maps, earning points at the end of each mission, which they can use to buy new skills and equipment for the characters. Mostly, it makes me want Advance Wars 3D. Surely that can’t be far off.
Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition
Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition is the 3D edition of Super Street Fighter IV. That’s it. Same gameplay and everything, just autostereoscopic. No big thing. Ask UPSLynx about this one. He’ll tell you.
The full launch title list is below in its own new category, but I want to put forth a final note: If the 3Ds was also a cellular phone with Android, I would pay a thousand dollars for it, maybe more. Just putting that out there.
