A new game in the Dead Space series has recently gone live on the iTunes App Store for both the iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch models. Specifically designed for iOS devices, the new installment continues the story of the previous games, starting three years after the destruction of the Marker in the first Dead Space story. The action-horror game pits you against hordes of Necromorphs yet again in the Mines of Titan, with a few plot twists and turns waiting in the shadows.
Dead Space is taking the iOS platform seriously, complete with an unnerving audio and visual experience. The game sports voice acting and a complete musical score to fit the ambiance. Sound effects show attention to detail, complete with echoing footsteps and unsettling cries from the unnatural inhabitants of the mines. Visually, the game is fully 3D, including special effects and atmospheric lighting.
Gameplay is designed from the ground up to work with the iOS touch displays in an intuitive manner. Environments are explored and combat is executed via swipe and tap controls. The on-screen HUD is also integrated into the game environment itself to help prevent breaking the suspense of the game. The game also includes two new weapons exclusive to the iOS release, including the Plasma Saw and Core Extractor. Of course, three weapons for the Dead Space universe are also included. The physics-based Kinesis and Stasis Modules from the original Dead Space games are also featured in the iOS counterpart.
Also featured in Dead Space is both a credit-based upgrade system and an in-game real-money store to purchase other various enhancements and goodies. Weapons can be upgraded with Power Nodes when various upgrade benches are visited. The “real money” store offers weapon upgrades, unlocks to various sealed doors, increased overall performance with Weapon Output and Armor Integrity modules, or even investments in Credit Boosters to gain more credits from slain Necromorphs. While it does cost real money for the in-app upgrade store (for instance, the Weapon Output module upgrade is currently $1.99), it’s still a great way to add to the experience or make life in the game a little bit easier.
As an added bonus for picking up Dead Space for iOS, you get a special secret unlock in Dead Space 2 for Xbox 360, PS3, or PC. All you have to do is register the game and follow the directions, and its yours. You can pick up both the iPhone version and the iPad version from the App store.
